Installation of phc-intel on RHEL-6

Post by Nazia » Wed 1. Aug 2012, 07:04

I have downloaded phc-intel-0.3.2-10 package for my kernel version 2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64.I am able to do 'make prepare','make' and 'make install'.
I unloaded acpi_cpufreq module. But when am trying to do 'modprobe phc-intel',I am getting the following error:
FATAL: Error inserting phc_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64/extra/phc-intel.ko): Device or resource busy
lsmod gives me the following results:

Take a look here:

http://linuxsolver.blogspot.it/2012/05/ ... -1204.html

you have to make sure old modules are no more loaded or, if it necessary, blacklisted.

If you care you can install phctool too, to set voltages easily. ^_^

Hi
I tried using this guide only, but still am not able to overcome this error:
FATAL: Error inserting phc_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64/extra/phc-intel.ko): Device or resource busy
When am executing lsmod, acpi-cpufreq is not there in the list. And when am trying to insert acpi-cpufreq back, then also am getting the following error:
FATAL: Error inserting phc_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64/extra/phc-intel.ko): Device or resource busy
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): Device or resource busy
FATAL: Error running install command for acpi_cpufreq
Please guide me on how to get this module working??
Thanx

Code: Select all

uname -a

This module, like acpi-cpufreq, controls the frequency of your processor and like the Highlander, there can only be one. So you can try to unload pcc_cpufreq and load the acpi-cpufreq or phc_intel module instead. It may work but I don't know if your system will work with the acpi-cpufreq/phc-intel driver out of the box or at all. Maybe you need to change some BIOS settings in advance (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cg ... 626893#c14 comment #14 suggests this). Some more information about pcc-control: http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Document ... pufreq.txt

uname -a gives me the following:
Linux power1.cdacb.in 2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jul 5 21:08:58 EDT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I tried removing pcc-cpufreq and then inserting phc-intel.It gave me following error:
modprobe phc-intel
FATAL: Error inserting phc_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64/extra/phc-intel.ko): No such device
modprobe acpi-cpufreq
FATAL: Error inserting phc_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64/extra/phc-intel.ko): No such device
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
FATAL: Error running install command for acpi_cpufreq

Looks like your system does not support the "right" kind of infrastructure to use the acpi-cpufreq module. If you can't find a way to enable this kind of support (like done in the redhat bugzilla link I posted earlier), you won't be able to use phc-intel. It would be simple incompatible. So, next thing to do would be to consult the fine manual of your machine and dig through the BIOS settings to enable what is called "OS Control" in the redhat bug report. Maybe it's called the same in your BIOS, maybe it's called something else and maybe it's not there at all - which would mean you are stuck with the pcc-cpufreq module.
