íntallation works but lmsensors shows Vcore doesn't change

Post by ntt2010 » Tue 11. Jan 2011, 18:16

Hi

I have a Core 2 Duo E6700 on an Asus P5NSLI motherboard and kernel 2.6.37. I downloaded, patched, installed phc-linux 0.3.2. Everything goes smoothly.

However, I cannot change the CPU voltage. /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu?/cpufreq/phc_default_vids shows "38 33 27". I wrote some lower values to phc-vids (30 25 20). I checked and phc_controls shows "10:30 8:25 6:20" as it should be. However, nothing happens to the CPU. lm-sensors still shows Vcore = 1.33V, and the CPU temperature doesn't show any appreciable change.

Could somebody help? Is this due the BIOS settings somehow? (I used all default settings in the BIOS, all power saving, monitor feature are turned on).

Thanks.

If you change the vids to ridiculously low values, does it freeze? In that case lm-sensors is just in error...
(Please report your findings, even if lm-sensors is wrong it is useful to know here...)

I did

Code: Select all

echo "1 1 1" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/phc_vids
echo "1 1 1" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/phc_vids
phc_controls shows "10:1 8:1 6:1". But nothing happens physically.
My lm-sensors shows:
atk0110-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
Vcore Voltage: +1.33 V (min = +0.85 V, max = +1.60 V)
+3.3 Voltage: +3.26 V (min = +3.00 V, max = +3.60 V)
+5.0 Voltage: +4.95 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V)
+12.0 Voltage: +12.03 V (min = +11.20 V, max = +13.20 V)
CPU FAN Speed: 1247 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
CHASSIS FAN Speed: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
POWER FAN Speed: 1044 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
CPU Temperature: +43.0 C (high = +90.0 C, crit = +125.0 C)
MB Temperature: +28.0 C (high = +45.0 C, crit = +90.0 C)
Same as before. No change in Vcore, no change in CPU Temperature. Just for the record, my /proc/cpuinfo for cpu0 is (cpu1 is the same)

Hello altogether!

I have the same behaviour here with 2.3.37+ and Intel Core i7-720QM: There are seven VID values, but does not seem to have any impact when I lower then, even to zero.

I would be offering help with debugging using my laptop, if it helps, so that I could finally also benefit from power saving.

Many thanks for everybody involved up to now, and many greetings,

Mazze
