Kernel 2.6.35(-rc6)

Hi! I manually patched kernel 2.6.35-rc6 on Arch Linux, and compiled the PHC module copying the contents of folder "2.6.34" into "2.6.35" and changing all the respective occurrences in the files. I don't know if this was the right procedure, but at least I am able to read and change the VID's.

However, when I boot Arch with the PHC module, the fan jumps directly into 70%, whereas with the vanilla kernel using the KMS's radeon PM (I have a Mobility Radeon X1600 GPU on a HP NC8430 notebook) it manages to stay at 55% (and a good while at 20% if Arch is the first thing I boot) which is the normal state at Windows side (and my proxy for the "total" computer temperature, since I don't know if it's possible to read the GPU temperature which seems to be the more critical than CPU).

By the way, the voltages I use at Windows side for the Core 2 Duo T7200 / 2 GHz CPU are for the 6 first FIDs (6-11) 0.95 V and for the FID 12 0.9875 V. I think this corresponds to VIDs 19 and 22 (at linux side there are only 4 FIDs, I assume they are 6-8-10-12).

I wasn't on battery to see the power consumption when I tested the PHC module, but due to accelerated fan I didn't think it would have been lower than without the module.

I'm on a quest to get at least close to Windows power consumption, on Vista I get 14 W (still quite high compared to my work laptop Lenovo X61's 9 W), on Debian with ATI proprietary driver (and without PHC, I'll try it next over there) around 20 W and on Arch Linux with Radeon KMS around 23 W (A slight improvement from this: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthre ... post136687).

Any hints to improve here are greatly appreciated!

P.S. As a side note, the Windows versions power consumption is inversely proportional to the memory and resource footprints, Vista<XP<W2K, so they must be doing at least something right (don't have Windows 7 so don't know if the trend continues but it would actually be harmful for W7 ;)). I only dream on using W2K (or Ubuntu or Arch for that matter) with Vista's power management!

Have you been able to compile the PHC module for the final 2.6.35 kernel? I'm currently trying to update the patchfile for the latest 2.6.35.7 without success. Can you tell how you did it exactly? Thanks in advance.

Great. I was afk for a while, posted my reply here and it threw me to a login screen (and of course I lost what I had typed).

But in essence, patched the kernel that shouldn't be necessary any more, copied 2.6.34 folder renamed it to 2.6.35 and replaced all occurrences of "2.6.34" in all files to "2.6.35" and then went by the instruction text file that was included in the package. No rocket science since I did it for the first time and supposedly got it right since didn't receive any fatal error messages. After rebooting to the new kernel lsmod shows if you have the modules running.

ps: YES these patches are based on the official 2.6.35 and 2.6.36 acpi-cpufrec.c files

I have attached an update that works for me with an Intel Core2 Duo on stock kernels 2.6.37-rc5 and 2.6.37-rc8

Has anyone had a look at andy's patch? It builds fine on 2.6.37 final, but it would be nice if an admin could review it and if it's good maybe move it to the downloads page.
