PHC-K8 on Gentoo Updated

Post by leycec » Wed 10. Jul 2013, 03:23

Gentoo overlay raiagent now provides an unofficial (but hopefully well-written) ebuild for PHC-K8 0.4.5 beta 2, the newest release as of this writing. Whereas the official PHC-K8 ebuild was last updated in 2011 and thus incompatible with recent kernels, the updated ebuild remains compatible with 3.10 kernels (...and beyond?).

Installation couldn't be simpler. O.K. – it probably could. But. this. is. Gentoo:
  • * Install layman, if not already.
    emerge -av layman
    * Add overlay raiagent.
    layman -a raiagent
    * Update PHC-K8.
    emerge -av phc-k8
    * Configure PHC-K8.
    vi /etc/conf.d/phc-k8
    * Add PHC-K8 to the boot runlevel.
    rc-update add phc-k8 boot
As hinted above, the updated ebuild sports a number of spiffy improvements over the official ebuild. This includes a system-wide configuration file defining the vids to be applied to all available CPUs and a corresponding initscript applying such vids. Simple but effective persistent undervolting. (Voilà!)

The updated ebuild also corrects a number of outstanding issues with the official ebuild. Namely, it no longer spuriously complains about kernel configuration option CONFIG_X86_POWERNOW_K8 being unset. :roll:

Enjoy, geek lords and lordettes!

And a big, penguin-sized thanks to the linux-phc team. You guys are fantastic. Thanks for all the tireless efforts.

You're welcome! FWIW, I just uploaded a new phc-k8 beta driver to the test-releases topic. I intend to release it as stable if it doesn't raise new issues... It supports 3.11 and the latest changes for the impending 3.12-rc1.
